Earth Day 2018: End Plastic Pollution.

Close to 48 years ago, on 22 April 1970, millions of people took to the streets to protest the negative impacts of 150 years of industrial development.

In the US and around the world, smog was becoming deadly and evidence was growing that pollution led to developmental delays in children. Biodiversity was in decline as a result of the heavy use of pesticides and other pollutants.

The global ecological awareness was growing, and the US Congress and President Nixon responded quickly. In July of the same year, they created the Environmental Protection Agency, and robust environmental laws such as the Clean Water Act and the Endangered Species Act, among many.

Earth Day 2018

From poisoning and injuring marine life to disrupting human hormones, from littering our beaches and landscapes to clogging our waste streams and landfills, the exponential growth of plastics is now threatening the survival of our planet.

In response, Earth Day 2018 is dedicated to providing the information and inspiration needed to fundamentally change human attitude and behavior about plastics.

AMC Binational Committees Working Strengthen Region Through Collaboration.
The Arizona-Mexico Commission’s (AMC) binational committees have been hard at work this month, working for collaborative ideas and solutions that will strengthen our region. Governor Ducey has set an ambitious vision for the committees in partnership with Sonora Governor Claudia Pavlovich - a vision that is producing real results with lasting impacts.

Just last week, the Arizona and Sonora leadership of our committees came together at the AMC Inter-Plenary Session to set goals and develop their work plans leading into the June 2018 AMC Summit.

More than 120 Arizona and Sonora leaders attended the meeting, continuing their work to increase competitiveness and quality of life across the region by strengthen the ties between our states and countries.

This kind of collaborative cross-border work is what has fueled the AMC’s proven legacy for nearly 60-years and it’s what continues to strengthen the business and cultural ties between our states.

Arizona & Sonora - Creating a safer trip to RP.

ADOT representatives visited Mexico recently to train first responders, the military and government officials on Traffic Incident Management, which promotes quickly clearing incident scenes when appropriate as well as safeguards for motorists and emergency workers. Traffic Incident Management techniques have been shown to reduce secondary crashes that often are more serious than the initial incidents.

The next step of this binational partnership is Sonora creating a safety corridor before spring break season along the 63 miles of Mexico Route 8, which many Arizonans take south from Lukeville.

Puerto Peñasco, also known as Rocky Point, is a popular destination for Arizonans. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, more than 910,000 people entered Arizona at Lukeville during the first 10 months of 2017, many of them Arizonans returning from visits to Rocky Point.

Welcoming Spring

Here are some ideas how you can celebrate Ostara (spring equinox).

  1. Take a walk. Notice the birds twittering. Take a moment to study a budding flower. Take your shoes off and feel the sand. (And while you’re at it, take a moment to ground yourself) Let the breeze dance in your hair.
  2. Meditate outside. Find a quiet spot, wherever you feel most comfortable. Take a seat, close your eyes, and just breathe.
  3. Plant something. Whether it’s a single seed or full blown tree is totally up to you.
  4. Lay under a tree and just be. Lie under a tree and watch the way the sun illuminates the leaves.
  5. Bird watch. You can always sit quietly in your yard and watch the birds, but if you’re really in the mood for a gaggle throw a handful of seed onto the grass and wait for the party.
  6. Have a picnic. You can plan a special Ostara meal filled with Ostara foods (anything fresh and vibrant is appropriate!).
  7. Smudge yourself. Just as the earth sheds its icy cloak, it’s time for you to shed that funky energy! Grab yourself a smudge stick, a twig of rosemary, or a handful of sage leaves and get rid of the stagnant energy of winter! And while you're at it, spring clean your home's energy!

Most importantly enjoy the nature, connect and care about it and yourself.

Holy week & Easter in Mexico

Semana Santa (Holy Week in English) is the week leading up to Easter. This is a very important religious holiday in Mexico. Religious celebrations are at the forefront, but, since Mexican schools have two weeks vacation period at this time (the week of Semana Santa, and the following week, which is referred to as Semana de Pascua, which means "Easter Week"), it's also a time when Mexican families head to the beaches and tourist attractions.

Religious Celebrations
The religious observances of Semana Santa do not take a back seat to beach fun, however. Processions and passion plays take place all through the country, though different areas celebrate in different ways and certain communities have more effusive celebrations.
Jesus' final days are evoked in the rituals that take place during the week.
  • Palm Sunday - Domingo de Ramos
  • Maundy Thursday - Jueves Santo
  • Good Friday - Viernes Santo
  • Holy Saturday - Sabado de Gloria

Happy Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day is a celebration of love and friendship. The idea of Valentine's Day seems to have originated during the Middle Ages, somewhere around the 14th or 15th century. The holiday derived its name from two Roman martyrs for love, both named Valentine.

The first Valentine was beheaded on February 14th, but not before leaving a note signed from your Valentine for his lady. The second Valentine was supposedly a bishop who secretly married young couples, an act that was forbidden by the Roman Emperor who wanted young men to first serve as soldiers before marrying. Valentine ignored the law and was beheaded on February 14. An ancient Roman festival called Lupercalia, a celebration for which young men randomly chose the name of a young girl to escort to the festivities, has also been linked to the origins of Valentine's Day. Since then, the custom of selecting a sweetheart on February 14th has spread through Europe and its colonies and transformed itself into the celebration of love and friendship that we know today.

Here are some ideas for things to do on this day:

  • Send someone you care for a Valentine's Day card. Take the time to write a small note or love poem inside. Sign it, from your Valentine.
  • Go to a special romantic dinner with your sweetheart. Tip: Book early as this is one of the busiest days of the year for restaurants. (It can also be on the beach, just saying...)
  • Watch a romantic movie after dinner.
  • Send a Secret Valentine to someone several days before, and then reveal your identity on February 14th.
  • Remember other important people in your life, such as your parents, grandparents and old friends. Send them a small card or gift to remind them of how much you care.
  •

"Love is the only force capable of transforming an enemy into a friend." - Martin Luther King Jr.

President's Day
President's Day, or Washington's Birthday as it is still legally known, was originally designed as a celebration of George Washington's birth date.

In 1880, Congress voted to make this the first national holiday which honored an individual. In 1968, Congress enacted the Uniform Monday Bill, to give workers as many long weekends as possible. This moved as many holidays to a standard Monday each year.

Many states were already honoring Abraham Lincoln's birthday, February 12th, and this celebration was combined with George Washington's birthday, for one federal holiday.

It is observed on the third Monday in February each year.

The Morning Rituals Four Health Experts Swear By

Mornings are a perfect time to set a positive tone for the rest of the day. But that's hard when we're in a rush and mornings are a blur of shower steam, crummy coffee and a brisk breakfast.

Those extra five snoozes are undeniably tempting, but there's a few great reasons to get up earlier to extend your mornings and fit in some you-time, whether that's in the form of breakfast, exercise or a quiet moment drinking coffee in bed.

"I'm a real fan of having a routine because it helps set the day up in a really positive way," accredited practising dietitian Chloe McLeod told HuffPost Australia.

"Something as simple as making the bed or having a shower at a slower pace can work really nicely to help centre you and go into the day feeling much more calm and energised."

Beyond that day, having a set routine every morning is also great for the long-term.

Take a moment for yourself before getting stuck into work.

"Routines become habits, so if our daily routine incorporates habits that are good for us, it will go a long way towards helping us to feel healthier and happier," nutritionist Fiona Tuck said.

Rushing and stressing in the morning not only makes the rest of the day more challenging, but it can affect our digestion, energy and cortisol levels.

Market Analysis December & 2017 Year to Date

2017 showed strong growth in sales for the Sandy Beach Condo market and I see that trend continuing.
While the beach communities experienced some growth, it fell short of what I had anticipated, my “optimistic” outlook is that 2018 will be a considerably stronger year.

7 Reasons Your Body Wants You To Plan A Beach Trip Right Now

Ah, the beach. Is there anything better? There’s just no place quite as relaxing, beautiful or pleasant, and no place that combines the simple pleasures of unplugging and enjoying nature in our otherwise tech-heavy and work-driven realities. The beach helps us recharge — and we need to be making A LOT more use of it.

We know most jobs already offer vacation time, but considering these specific health benefits of the beach, maybe it’s time they carved out days for their employees to spend in the sun and sand.

  1. Sunshine is a great source of vitamin D.
  2. Sand is a natural exfoliant.
  3. It could help rheumatoid arthritis patients feel better.
  4. Also, sunlight has been shown to decrease depression.
  5. Seawater preserves elasticity of skin.
  6. A day at the beach gets you moving without even trying.
  7. And perhaps most importantly, the beach decreases your stress level by helping you unplug.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day

The Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday celebrates the life and legacy of a man who brought hope and healing to America. We commemorate as well the timeless values he taught us through his example — the values of courage, truth, justice, compassion, dignity, humility and service that so radiantly defined Dr. King’s character and empowered his leadership. On this holiday, we commemorate the universal, unconditional love, forgiveness and nonviolence that empowered his revolutionary spirit.

We commemorate Dr. King’s inspiring words, because his voice and his vision filled a great void in our nation, and answered our collective longing to become a country that truly lived by its noblest principles. Yet, Dr. King knew that it wasn’t enough just to talk the talk, that he had to walk the walk for his words to be credible. And so we commemorate on this holiday the man of action, who put his life on the line for freedom and justice every day, the man who braved threats and jail and beatings and who ultimately paid the highest price to make democracy a reality for all Americans.

Dear Grant,

Just a note to let you know how much we enjoyed working with you in the sale of our house in Las Conchas.  You were always professional and upbeat . You seemed to really care about us and the sale of our house. When the offer finally came in you handled all the legal/escrow work with extreme professionalism . We did not have to worry about how to do this transaction in Mexico.  It was very smooth and stress free.

We would certainly recommend you to anyone who is looking to buy or sell real estate in Mexico.

Sincerely,

Thank you for lighting so many of our days in Rocky Point. Were grateful for you, our valued clients, this month of Thanksgiving and always.

We’ll have our Thanksgiving feast with our family looking out to the beach we love. A family tradition we have on Thanksgiving is for each of us to share (from the youngest to the oldest) what we’re thankful for. Yes, we have some tears before we’ve finished and great joy, laughter and love. What’s your tradition? Is this the year to create one? Savor the moments... Happy Thanksgiving!

Market Analysis October & 2017 Year to Date

October saw lots of visitors to Rocky Point and increased interest in “on” and “off” beach homes and condos. Inventory in the beach communities and Sandy beach condos continues to shrink.
  • Las Conchas inventory is misleading and influenced by the addition of about 20 condos on the market at Corona Del Sol
  • Sandy Beach is enjoying growth and declining inventory.
The Rocky Point home and condo market continues to strengthen at a moderate and healthy pace.

Our Clients Say It The Best!

Dear Grant,

We just want to say thank you for hanging in there with us until the very end of our sale of our Las Conchas home. You handled the challenges like a pro! If you didn’t know the answer, you would find the answer and get right back to us. We never felt like we were being ignored or put on the back burner. We truly felt like you had our best interests in mind.
You always kept us in the loop and told us how many people went to tour our home. We also asked for their comments and you would share them with us. We would then adjust the price, furnishings, landscape, etc. to improve our chances of a successful sale. Thank you for the tips!
Your expertise, professionalism and top-notch service showed from the moment we met you. We also would like to commend your office staff, Alexa and Reyna, as they were extremely helpful in getting emails sent out, paperwork together etc.
Thank you for your time and efforts in getting our home sold. We would not hesitate to use you again in any real estate transaction.

Sending our best wishes for you and your team.

Fall Harvest is Coming!

Fall’s on the way! What would you like to do this fall? What one thing will give you a memorable fall? Do you have a few minutes to “play” with it? Remember when you were a child and “curiosity” was your sand box? It was where you lived and played.
Yesterday I built a “castle” with our 4 year old Grandson. It consisted of one recliner, one arm chair, a blanket for the roof and floor, a sword made a flag and his face said it all: “we have our very own castle”. Plus, we had a picnic in our castle. Where’s your imagination/curiosity going to take you this fall?
Sure hope you find time to come to the beach and create your own sense of wonder just as you did when you were children. Do it with someone you care about and enjoy it twice as much. Happy Fall!

Market Analysis August & 2017 Year to Date

Our market continues to improve, in the past 30 days we have closed on 4 of my beachfront listings, 3 in Las Conchas and one in Laguna Shores.
2 selling in the $750,000 range and 2 in the $400,000 range. It is encouraging to see movement in both price segments, especially the $750,000 range considering the highest priced sale during the past several years was around $650,000
October is reported as being the busiest month of the year as it relates to visitors coming to Rocky Point, so we will be adding several new listings and look for great buyer activity in October.

Mexico Independence Day!

Independence Day (Día de la Independencia) is a Mexican holiday to celebrate the “cry of independence” on September 16, 1810, which started a revolt against the Spaniards. It follows from the day of the Cry of Dolores (El Grito de Dolores), on September 15.

Mexicans celebrate their country’s Independence Day with fireworks, parties (fiestas), food, dance and music on September 16. Flags, flowers and decorations in the colors of the Mexican flag – red, white and green – are seen in public areas in cities and towns in Mexico. Whistles and horns are blown and confetti is thrown to celebrate this festive occasion. "Viva Mexico" or "Viva la independencia” are shouted amidst the crowds on this day.

September Equinox

The September equinox occurs the moment the Sun crosses the celestial equator – the imaginary line in the sky above Earth’s Equator – from north to south. This happens either on September 22, 23, or 24 every year.

On the equinox, night and day are nearly exactly the same length – 12 hours – all over the world. This is the reason it's called an "equinox," derived from Latin, meaning "equal night." However, even if this is widely accepted, it isn't entirely true. In reality, equinoxes don't have exactly 12 hours of daylight.

September Equinox in Rocky Point, Mexico is on Friday, September 22, 2017 at 1:02 pm MST.

International Day of Peace

The International Day of Peace (“Peace Day”) is observed around the world each year on 21 September.
Established in 1981 by unanimous United Nations resolution 36/37, the General Assembly has declared this as a day devoted to  “commemorating and strengthening the ideals of peace both within and among all nations and peoples.”

The 2017 U.N. Peace Day Theme:
Together for Peace: Respect, Safety and Dignity for All

This theme is based on the TOGETHER global campaign that promotes respect, safety and dignity for everyone forced to flee their homes in search of a better life. TOGETHER brings together the organizations of the United Nations System, the 193 member countries of the United Nations, the private sector, civil society, academic institutions and individual citizens in a global partnership in support of diversity, non-discrimination and acceptance of refugees and migrants.

August 2017 Newsletter

Let's enjoy the beach together!

We would like to dedicate this month's newsletter to youth and humanity. Celebrating the International Youth Day and World Humanitarian Day, it seems good to think about what these two days mean; one linked to the other, because we cannot hope for a humanitarian world if we don't focus first on our youth.

Starting at home and keep doing it wherever we go, teaching the youngest about love, respect, compassion and empathy, we teach them to be grateful and caring as we all are. Because they are, after all, the future of humanity.

“We cannot always build the future for our youth, but we can build our youth for the future.” – Franklin D. Roosevelt.

"You must not lose faith in humanity. Humanity is an ocean; if a few drops of the ocean are dirty, the ocean does not become dirty. " - Mahatma Gandhi
